Bayer Compendium Highlights NCTL Curricula

Bayer Corporation's second edition of Planting the Seeds for a Diverse U.S. STEM Pipeline: A Compendium of Best Practice K-12 STEM Education Programs highlights the elementary and middle school curricula of the National Center for Technological Literacy®, calling Engineering is Elementary® one of 38 K-12 Best Practice Programs and Building Math one of five Promising Programs.

According to Bayer president and CEO Greg Babe, the United States "continues to face a workforce shortage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. We must do a better job of tapping the talent of citizens who are underrepresented in STEM fields: women, African-Americans, Hispanics and American Indians. Our global competitiveness depends on our ability to attract and retain future generations in areas such as chemistry, engineering, the physical sciences, mathematics and the computer sciences.

"Our surveys of Fortune 1000 and emerging high-technology company CEOs show they 'get it.' They know that science literacy and diversity are essential to their own companies and to America's position in the world. What's more, many are taking action through partnerships with educators and government leaders to get the job done. The STEM programs and resources detailed in this booklet provide valuable guidance."

Dr. Mae C. Jemison, the nation's first African-American female astronaut, a chemical engineer, physician, educator, and STEM company CEO, says, "The pre-college science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs showcased in this compendium share three key strengths. First, they inspire all students and grow the innate interest all kids have for these subjects, particularly girls and underrepresented minorities. The compendium, shared with other interested STEM corporations and foundations, includes for each program an overview, reach and target population, program partners, learning environment, results, and partnership opportunities.
