USA Science & Engineering Festival Expands for 2012

January 09, 2012

On April 28-29, Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®) curriculum developers from the National Center for Technological Literacy® at the Museum of Science will participate in the nation's largest celebration of science and engineering, the USA Science & Engineering Festival, hosted by Lockheed Martin. The Finale Expo in Washington, D.C., features over 2,000 hands-on activities and over 150 performances. The Discovery Channel's "MythBusters" Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman and Bill Nye the Science Guy will be among the science superstars at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. On April 27, EiE developers will join an invitation-only festival sneak peek for students and teachers from area and underserved schools, home school groups, military families, government officials, and media.

At the Engineering is Elementary booth, festival visitors will design a submersible based on the Taking the Plunge: Designing Submersibles unit, which links a science unit on sinking and floating to ocean engineering. Festival participants will test the floating and sinking behaviors of instruments, consider the submersible's volume and how many instruments they can take on board, and attempt to retrieve packages from a model ocean floor. All 20 EiE storybooks and some of the unit binders will be available for purchase in a booth at the Festival's new book fair.

Building on festival excitement, organizers of the 2nd Prekindergarten-12 Engineering and Design Education Research Summit are moving their April 26-28 meeting to Washington, DC. The summit offers a forum and mentoring for newcomers and Ph.D. students in this emerging field's growing community of researchers. The theme is iSTEM-Integration of Engineering into other STEM fields. Visit:

The Triangle Coalition Legislative Conference is another important pre-festival event which draws Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) advocates to Capitol Hill to educate members of Congress and staff on the importance of STEM education and programs in their states. Those interested can join the Triangle Coalition and/or participate in their annual legislative conference. For more:

The inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival in October 2010 included nearly one million participants across the U.S. in a month-long celebration. The two-day culmination on the National Mall involved over 500,000 people and 500 scientific organizations and had support from the White House and Congress.
