NCTL Founder, Wellesley College President, Company CEO Honored

January 17, 2013

Science Club for Girls has honored Museum of Science, Boston president and director Ioannis Miaoulis with the Catalyst Award for his commitment to promoting girls, women and underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Science Club for Girls is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free educational programs for young women in eastern Massachusetts.

"The remarkable thing about Dr. Miaoulis," says Dr. Connie Chow, executive director of the Science Club for Girls, "is that he managed to create a net conversion of students, female and male, into engineering majors at Tufts and, as the creator of the National Center for Technological Literacy® (NCTL®), he also has dramatically increased the exposure of K-12 students to engineering, while striving to make the subject accessible to low-income students."

Also receiving Catalyst Awards were Wellesley College president Dr. H. Kim Bottomly and Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company and its CEO Dr. Deborah Dunsire, a Museum of Science trustee. All three awardees are innovators in promoting women and underrepresented groups in STEM: Miaoulis, as a museum leader and engineer, begins as early as elementary school; Bottomly, an immunobiologist, continues the process through college and beyond; while Dunsire, who is both a physician and CEO, takes it into the workplace.

"My passion for this cause was ignited years ago by an 8th grade girl who was eager to work with me on a science project, in spite of the fact that her teacher favored the boys in her class," says Miaoulis. "Being recognized by Science Club for Girls, an organization that I highly respect, is especially meaningful." Prior to joining the Museum, Miaoulis was dean of the engineering school at Tufts.

The Science Club for Girls' mission is to increase girls' confidence and literacy in STEM through hands-on explorations led by mentors.
