NCTL Curriculum Wins Education Innovation Award

January 19, 2014

This past October the Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SV[e]F) announced the four winners of its STEM Innovation Awards for 2013. Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®), a project of the National Center for Technological Literacy® at the Museum of Science, Boston, won in the "Engineering" category.

A California non-profit, SV[e]F delivers programs and develops partnerships to improve STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in California as a whole--and in Silicon Valley in particular. In addition to engineering education, the foundation's annual awards also recognize innovation in science, technology, and math education.

"We received many competitive applications this year," says SV[e]F's Anna Schuessler, "and our selection committee decided that EiE rose to the top."

"Quite a number of California schools and districts already use EiE," says EiE director Christine Cunningham. "We're really pleased that thanks to SV[e]F we'll be able to support even wider use of the curriculum." The award comes with a $5,000 prize, which EiE will use to enhance existing partnerships and bring the hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum to more elementary students in the state.

The 20-unit EiE curriculum integrates engineering and technology with science, language arts, social studies, and math via storybooks and hands-on design activities for 1st - 5th graders. The nation's largest elementary engineering curriculum, EiE is the first to focus on engineering and technology, reinforce science concepts, and collect data on student and teacher learning; it is also the model for a European Commission-funded initiative to introduce engineering in primary schools and museums in nine European countries and Israel.

EiE is one of six STEM curricula being developed by the NCTL. Collectively these curricula have reached an estimated 67,726 teachers and 4.8 million students in 50 states.
