Institute of Museum and Library Services Closing

July 12, 2017

At this year's FY18 budget roll out event, instead of talking about new priorities and opportunities, the folks at IMLS presented via webinar how they would be shutting down their operations based on this Administration's budget proposal.

IMLS director Dr. Kathryn Matthews said, "The institutions we serve provide vital resources that contribute significantly to Americans' economic development, education, health, and well-being whether by facilitating family learning and catalyzing community change or stimulating economic development through job training and skills development."

IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and approximately 35,000 museums. Their mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement.

The IMLS Office of Museum Services (OMS) awarded $31.3 million in federal funds to museums across the nation in FY16 and Congress provided $31.7 million for OMS in the recently enacted FY17 budget.

The Museum of Science is obviously very concerned about this proposal and has contacted key members of Congress to urge that this unwarranted elimination of a revered federal agency does not come to pass.
